Summary: Progressive world and Russian community oppose industrial use of specially protected areas and all cutting methods in particular. According to the Forest Code adopted in 2006, there are more than 20 protection categories in the Russian forest legislation. One-third of them forbid any industrial cutting. All methods of felling, including clear cutting and thinning aimed at improving the condition of forest stands are allowed in other categories of forests. However, all these types of use are associated with harvesting specific assortments best-sold in the market. But in addition to round wood there are other resources on such protected territories, for example saw logs, pit props etc. Besides it should be borne in mind that some timber enterprises are located on the areas of protection categories. Sustainability of timber enterprises and local areas will increase if timber and forests, non-wood and recreational resources, uncovered forest and non forest lands will serve as subjects of labor for private entrepreneur and for local areas as well.
