Summary: The paper analyzes studies focused on identifying the main problems of logging roads destruction and their repair. The selected articles examined characteristics of logging roads and their destruction, cause-effect relation of pavement damage formation, operation of logging roads during winter and off-season periods, and the repair and improvement of their structures. Based on the results of the analysis, the authors identified the main causes of damage, existing approaches to the logging roads repair and roadway replacement, and the principal directions of logging road repair. Due to the unsatisfactory condition of a significant part of the road network of the Republic of Karelia, including the roads of the forest complex and the shortage of funds allocated for the construction and operation of roads, the authors proposed to create a system that optimizes the program of road works and increases the efficiency of using funds. The research in the field of logging roads improvement is proposed to perform at the junction of public and logging roads technologies using neural networks. The analysis of scientific papers describing the use of artificial intelligence in the timber transportation industry has been made, and technologies and methods of neural networks applicable in the field of logging road repair have been highlighted. Based on the analysis of the research results, the aim of the study is to improve the transport and operational qualities of logging roads by developing intelligent decision-making systems for their maintenance and repair. The ongoing research includes the following issues: 1) development of a methodology to analyze the condition of road surfaces using mobile road laboratories to determine their key damage that will allow shortening the time of analyzing a significant number of kilometers of roads; 2) a detailed study of the material and resource base of road construction materials in the region including the geographical location of the bases and the quality characteristics of the materials on them to select the road clothing from the material of the nearest quarry; 3) design and calculation of variants of road structures taking into account the characteristics of the materials of the region; 4) training a neural network to analyze the destruction shown on video data received from mobile devices road laboratories; 5) creation and integration of a decision-making algorithm for building structures selection depending on the geographical location of the object and its defects; 6) verification of the developed methods adequacy and assessment of the economic effect.
